Gijs Levelt neemt afscheid van de band

Onze trompettist Gijs vertrekt na 28 jaar

Sinds eind 1997 maakt Gijs deel uit van de Amsterdam Klezmer Band, maar nu kiest hij voor een nieuw avontuur.

Gijs kwam in 1997 bij de band vers van het conservatorium af en was van plan om de wereld te veroveren met zijn muziek, met zijn trompet. We hebben hem leren kennen als iemand met veel ambitie, een ijzersterk gevoel voor ritme en een niet stuk te krijgen humeur. Hierdoor is Gijs is een sterke kracht op het podium en zijn muzikale visie en uitingen hebben de Amsterdam Klezmer Band verrijkt en verbreed. Met zijn moderne, conceptuele en jazzy benadering heeft hij de grenzen van klezmermuziek verlegd.

Achter de schermen was Gijs jarenlang van groot belang voor de band, met zijn niet aflatende ambitie, zijn strategisch inzicht en zijn kracht om een lichte en positieve sfeer te bewaren.

Zoals u wel begrijpt is het vertrek van Gijs een grote aderlating voor de band. Gijs zijn invloed zal nog lange tijd merkbaar zijn.

Eind november zijn we voor de laatste keer samen de studio in geweest om het huidige repertoire op te nemen. Op 16 januari 2026 zal de AKB met gepaste weemoed van Gijs afscheid nemen door middel van een afscheidsconcert in De KHL in Amsterdam.

De band is desalniettemin van plan om onverminderd verder gaan met het maken van nieuwe plannen, optredens, tournees en mooie samenwerkingen.

We wensen Gijs een prachtig nieuw avontuur, waar en wat dat ook mag zijn, in Amsterdam, in Nederland of in het buitenland. We blijven in ieder geval vrienden en zullen elkaar niet uit het oog verliezen.

Our new album BOMBA POP is out

In late autumn 2022 we took up the plan to make a new album together with Ulf Lindemann, a.k.a. Dunkelbunt. We’d been working pleasantly with him many years ago during the Balkan beats rage of the early 2000’s . Dunkelbunt produced a few great remixes using AKB originals “Naie Chuppe” and “Chassid in Amsterdam” undergoing a metamorphosis into “la Revedere” and “Black eyed sea”.
We were looking for a producer that could help us find an adventurous, out of the box approach, evolving into an album that would deliver an exciting blend of traditional klezmer, oriental melodies and contemporary influences like pop, infused with an electric energy.

“Bomba Pop” became a musical journey, crafted by the Amsterdam Klezmer Band and Dunkelbunt in collaboration with talented guest artists. This album will provide an exciting listening experience for fans of klezmer, world music, and innovative cross-genre creations.

On 1 October, we would like to welcome you to the book presentation at Concerto Amsterdam. This book opens the doors for musicians of all ages and levels, beginners and experienced players alike, to discover and embrace the wonderful compositions of the Amsterdam Klezmer Band.
