Thursday 26 September 2019 – Balkan Beat
Amsterdam Klezmer Band & Bernard Orchestar (Brussels)
The season gets off to a flying start with the Bernard Orchestar’s hip and exhilarating Balkan sounds from Belgium. The Amsterdam Klezmer Band will open with a lively party set, with the Bernard Orchestar topping the show in fine style.
Thursday 31 October 2019 – Jazz it up
Amsterdam Klezmer Band with Joost Kroon + support act Fint Fransk Orkester (Norway)
Our October guest is the fantastic drummer Joost Kroon, one of the most sought-after drummers in the country, and famed for his work with bands like the New Cool Collective. This will be a jazzy event, an adventurous search for new perspectives, unexpected views,
and as-yet undiscovered sounds within our music…
And tonight’s support act will be chansons from… Norway! The Fint Fransk Orkester (Fine French Orchestra) and its front man, trombonist and singer Dominique Brackeva, will bring originals as well as subtle interpretations of the French classics – Gainsbourg, Trenet and Piaf. Chansons, cabaret, swing, hip-hop, trombone and accordion.
Thursday 28 November 2019 – Desert Grooves
Amsterdam Klezmer Band with Udo Demandt and Ahmed el Mahi (Brussels)
Tonight we groove to a cross-fertilization of North African and Eastern European rhythms. Udo Demandt teaches percussion and drums for the World Music department at Codarts, Rotterdam, and plays regularly with Magda Mendes, Lilian Vieira (Zuco 103), and others. Ahmed el Mahi is a musical all-rounder: singer, kanun and ud player for the Amsterdams Andalusisch Orkest, and more. The AKB is also working this year with the Amsterdams Andalusisch Orkest. Desert grooves!
Thursday 26 December 2019 – December Extravaganza
Amsterdam Klezmer Band and the Ambrassband
An extra festive Boxing Day evening with the Amsterdam Klezmer Band and the brilliant Ambrassband from Belgium. Ambrassband is an international 12-piece fanfare that was put together in Antwerp by Gregor Engelen (Antwerp Gypsy-Ska). Their music is virtuoso, raw, and stomping.
Thursday 30 January 2020 – Tarantella Frenzy
Amsterdam Klezmer Band with Vincenzo Acquaria Castellana (Sicily)
The Tarantella, a fast and frenzied dance, comes from southern Italy; it is one of the most well-known dances in the country. Its oldest form is called pizzica. The name is thought to come from the tarantula spider, whose deadly bite could be cured only by dancing wildly for hours. Could this be true? No spiders this evening… but you’ll dance till you drop!
Thursday 27 February 2020 – the next generation
We welcome the young musicians who took part in our ‘young talent’ workshop to show off their newly-acquired skills on the Mezrab stage. The next generation is eager to step up! With the Amsterdam Klezmer Band and Klezmagic.
Thursday 26 March 2020 – Surprise party
The AKB is working on a very special programme for March. We can’t tell you about it yet, but it’s going to be a worthy finish to the season!
